Joel Suárez Gómez is dancer, choreographer and educator. Born in Cuba he graduated in classical ballet, Cuban modern technique and Cuban folklore at the Escuela Nacional de Ballet de La Habana. He was part of National Ballet of Cuba (BNC), of Danza Contemporánea de Cuba (DCC) and since 2013 is based in Berlin, where he develops personal projects, working with choreographers like Sasha Waltz, Stephanie Thiersch, Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola, and various international artists in visual & fine arts. Interdisciplinary collaborations, new performative practices and analysis as well as community formats are driving his artistic interest.
Joel was recently involved in the creation of the modular artistic project “In C” that uses a democratic concept in creating, performing and sharing. Based on the revolutionary open minimal music composition by Terry Riley (1964), Sasha Waltz and her dancers developed 53 movement figures for a structural improvisation with clear rules and laws. Together with his colleague Zaratiana Randrianantenaina, Joel will share his artistic knowledge on how democratic principles can be practiced in dance and reflect on this relation.
